I made a blog!

Hello all! I’ve been toying with the idea of making a blog for a little while now, and the new year felt like the perfect time to try something new. 2018 was the year I really involved myself in the writing community for the first time, especially over on Twitter, and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. Not only is everyone so kind and supportive, but being around other writers has helped me improve my own writing so much—and taught me that writing doesn’t necessarily have to be a lonely craft. So, since joining writing Twitter has been so enjoyable, I thought I’d give this thing a whirl. Here’s 5 reasons I decided to take the plunge and make a blog.

Reviewing books

I’ve wanted to start reviewing books for a long time, but I’ve never quite known where to start. And of course, when someone asks me why I enjoyed a book, I suddenly forget everything about it other than “it was good”. I’d love to gain more confidence in my reviewing skills, so you can be sure to see all of my bookish ramblings and reviews on here in the near future!

Getting my thoughts onto the page

It turns out that I have a lot more thoughts about writing than I thought. So many that whenever I try to voice them aloud, it comes out as incoherent nonsense that doesn’t make sense to anyone except my muddled writer brain. I’ve always been able to articulate my thoughts better on paper than aloud, so by sharing them here, hopefully I can find some method in the madness. And who knows? Maybe some of my thoughts will be useful for someone reading.

Writing tips

Okay, so this ties into the last one a bit. But the mistakes I’ve made as a writer (and believe me, there have been many) have really helped develop my writing—maybe they can help others, too. Of course, different things work for different people. I learned everything I know about my writing process through trial and error, but I wouldn’t have found a place to start without the tips and advice from other writers. Writing is the hardest—we need to help each other out, here!

Helping me understand my writing

Since involving myself more in the writing community, it’s definitely been interesting to have an insight into other people’s writing processes—and just how different they are to my own. It’s important to figure out what’s right for you, and I’m still learning! Just when I think I’m officially a pantser, I go and plot a book and find that it somehow works well for me. So talking about my writing, and sharing my experiences as I stumble through writing a book, will hopefully be a big help in refining my writing method (that is, when there’s more to it than staring at a blank page).

Fun

Why else? Blogging is a fun way to share thoughts, connect with others, and engage more with the writing community. It’s a hobby more and more people are taking up, and even if I end up not posting here all that often, at least I’ll have given it a go!

So there you have it—that’s why I made this blog. Let’s see how this goes, and hopefully I’ll be able to keep up semi-regular posts on here. I’m thinking once a month, so I’ll still have time for everything life has to throw at me. What would you like to see on here? And if you have one, why did you decide to make a blog? Feel free to share your thoughts, or just say hi, in the comments. I look forward to blogging with you!

Until next time,

-AWM
