30 books by black authors to add to your TBR

TW: Police brutality, racism

Wherever you are in the world, news of the Black Lives Matter protests that have been happening around the globe will have reached you. These protests have been happening for years, but have recently culminated after the brutal and prolonged murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. White people like myself need to show up now more than ever; and continue to show up every day after this. Wilful silence isn’t going to help anybody. If you can’t get out and protest, if you can’t donate to bail funds, then you can still use your platform to uplift black voices.

With that in mind, this blog post is dedicated to compiling a list of all the books by black authors that have recently been recommended to me. Not only do we have a duty to support black authors as much as we support white authors, but all of the books in this list sound incredible and deserve to reach a wide audience. Please, if you’re able to, consider picking up one or more of the following books, or add them on Goodreads by clicking the images below.

THE BELLES by Dhonielle Clayton

I hope that this list will help people to take steps in reading more books by black authors. But supporting black creators isn’t just something we should be doing for this moment; it’s something that should become part of our everyday lives. While white people will never understand, this is just one of many ways we can stand. Yesterday, today, tomorrow, black lives matter.

If you have any other recommendations of books by black authors, please let me know in the comments! And if you’re looking for a more extensive list, my good friend Miriam has compiled an incredible masterlist which you can access via the tweet below.

Until next time,

– AWM
